The things you don't know will always be more important than the things you do know

This statement may appear misguided at a first glance, it seems counterintuitive and contradictory. In a world where we use information to guide us how could unknown information possibly be of more importance than known information. Evidently we continue to expand our knowledge of existence on both a personal and social level on a continuous basis. We recognise the utility in learning and it is to some extent the cardinal trait of human beings. Through acquisition of knowledge we progress and evolve our lives and societies, in this sense we accept the necessity of new information.

However there are some instances where new information is held in disdain and cast aside. Political standpoints evoke this kind of reaction in people, so do ideological possessions or identity breaches. All this is understandable, especially when you consider the immense emphasis these things place on grounding people to who they believe they are. We are all aware of our finitude of life increasingly so when juxtaposed to the infinity of the universe, so it makes sense to desire a group or idea to latch onto/seek protection from.

This unfortunately can occasionally prove to be stifling and counterproductive to movement towards change. Sometimes in life we require a recalibration of beliefs and values before we can progress as individuals. This alteration can be painful, the phoenix sheds its feathers and remerges out of its own ashes, leaving behind a rejuvinated being. We must all shed our ashes when necessary and accept the ability in others to show us what is righteous and what is dispensable.

Until next time,
