ELEVATING Your STATUS Guides ALL Your DECISIONS?
This title may look antithetical to the majority of my previous posts and the philosophy that I often espouse on here. However, it isn't intended to dishearten, it is intended to enlighten and spark curiosity.
So what do I mean by this remark? We're all aware of the human capacity to be selfish and self-serving. The ability resides on a scale, with some situated more to one extreme and others to the other. Nevertheless, it is clear that a degree of self-interest is beyond necessary to function in this world.
This begs the question of altruism and its existence. I would consider myself a compassionate person, and I do genuinely want to help people through my blog and podcast. However, I do concede that I am also looking for this to eventually sustain me financially, and therefore it is not an altruistic endeavour.
The phenomenon of elevating our status is what has driven our evolution and keeps us alive. However there are many avenues to elevate your status, and some are more admirable than others.
One way is to attempt to decrease the status of those around you to create the pretence of you having a higher status. Another is to elevate the status of those around you in a manner that benefits your reputation unjustifiably. There are many ways, but the method below is the one I believe to be most mutually beneficial to everyone.
Since deception and chicanery are inevitably prevalent, at least some of the time, in all aspects of life. How can we counteract and rectify the statement in the title of this blog?
The solution that I propose is that anyone possessing inequitably high status should aspire to philanthropically return it to those less fortunate. This however must be done through the medium of tangible impact and value, not opportunistic virtue signalling or flag waving.
In my opinion, this is the only way a society can stave off the rise of charlatans and resentful individuals who are not interested in gaining status morally and or deservedly. This is why communism has failed consistently throughout history, it may have commendable intentions, but despite this, the desire for status will always be present in humans.
So it would be wise, for the betterment of everyone, to promote a societal structure where competency and generosity are actively rewarded and encouraged.
